Alot of my friends taught themselves how to play the guitar. They said it's a waste of money, because LEARNING how to play a guitar from a teacher doesn't really help...well, I guess it depends, but this is what I hear alot.

Lessons are the best bet if you want to go far, but you can teach yourself a fair amount.

I just bought a bass guitar.
I've been playing bass for almost 5 years now. And I dabble in singing. I'm not particularly talented at either, but whatever.

I play the Trombone (2 months) and the piano (few years, but not serious, without a teacher.)  I wanted Drums, but the school was full (which isn't surprising, since it's a public school.)

I've been playing bass gutair for a few years now, only thing is that because I play without a pick as soon as my finger nails grow a tiny bit the tone changes for the worst and I stop playing... Only starting again when I cut my nails which happens every few weeks, shows how dedicated I am.

You could chew off your nails daily...or wear thimbles on all your fingers.

As for me...I can play the piano and the alto sax, though I haven't played either on a regular basis for years.  I would have continued playing the saxophone through high school, but the band had to come to school the last two weeks of summer break, stay after two hours every other day, and attend all the football games.  I wanted to continue practicing the sax at home, but is just so dang loud to play in a tiny room.  I tried playing my friends clarinet a couple months ago figuring it would be pretty similar to the saxophone, but it was much, much harder and I could barely get a sound out of the thing.  Also, unlike every other human in existence, I've never really had any desire to learn to play the guitar.

I hate chewing my nails.  It's only two fingers on my right hand that need to be "blunt" so to speak, so I could easily take better care.

I can play some basic tunes on the piano, I have some stuff which I'm using to learn (even though they're claranet books) so I can get better.  I didn't show any interest in playing gutair until some fool was given one that enticed me, and several years later I'm here.
